Ingredients
  

Dry ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
Wet ingredients
  • 1 stick frozen unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips, dried fruit, or nuts
Optional toppings
  • as desired coarse sugar, icing, or confectioners’ sugar for brushing or sprinkling

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line baking sheet with parchment.
  2. Whisk flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a bowl.
  3. Grate frozen butter into dry mix. Toss until crumbly.
  4. Freeze the bowl while preparing wet ingredients.
  5. Whisk cream, egg, and vanilla. Combine with dry ingredients and mix-ins.
  6. Gently knead dough on floured surface. Form into 8-inch disc.
  7. Cut into 8 wedges. Chill 15–30 mins.
  8. Brush tops with cream. Sprinkle sugar if desired.
  9. Bake 20–25 mins until golden. Cool 5 mins. Serve warm.

Notes
