- Boil dates and water; stir in baking soda.
- Mix flour, baking powder, and salt separately.
- Beat butter and sugar until fluffy; add eggs, vanilla, dry ingredients, and date mixture, mixing gently.
- Pour batter into dish over sauce layer.
- Bake for 50 minutes until moist crumbs form.
- Cool slightly; serve warm with toffee sauce and whipped cream or ice cream.
